Want a Career in Long Haul Trucking? Let Jim the Trucker Help

by Jim on Dec.28, 2008, under Front Page news

I started driving in 1985 for a moving company, and as a young man starting a new job I had to begin from the bottom. I had thought for years there had to be a better way or series of helpful books to help avoid pitfalls to getting to where a driver wanted to be. Choices of trucking schools, companies to work for after the school, training on the job etc. These are all serious questions that need to be answered to our satisfaction to make wise choices and avoid being trained in poor conditions with bad habits, habits that quite frankly could hurt you or the motoring public.
Back then the driver training left a lot to be desired, mine consisted of “hop over here, take the wheel…give me 5 hours sleep and don’t use my clutch” while we were going 65 mph down the highway. The owner had sat on the doghouse covering the engine and held the wheel. I was supposed to slip in the drivers seat and instantly take over this big rig. I did that and was scared down to my shorts. It was Kansas and I-70 was a long straight highway. No problem driving I thought, But how am I going to stop? Or change gears? When it came time to stop I did find a place to pull over safely.
Nobody should have to go through that extremely dangerous and unsafe scenario like I did. That is why the schools and training have came around in the past 25 years to what it is today.
Today I own my own truck all paid for, I drive pretty much where I want and for what rate I choose. It took me a long time to get here and be accident free for all the miles I have driven, but you will need some helpful guidance to make that career move. The lives of you and the mom with 3 kids in that car next to you depend on getting the best training and equipment you can. I found a place where you can get that information and will post a link to it here. Men and women from around the country have made the move to trucking, it is a wonderful job most days, but I will not kid you, it takes a special kind of person to be gone from home for sometimes weeks at a time. A driver named Jim Purcell has come up with a series of e-books to make it easier for you to make the career choice and find the school and training that you will need to survive.
